Dinner will be ready when you return. It doesn’t get much easier than this.

Variations

If sweet potatoes aren’t your preference, substitute white baking potatoes such as russets. Avoid small red potatoes—they cook faster and can become mushy. For extra vegetables, add fresh broccoli during the last hour of cooking so it becomes tender without overcooking.

If you prefer less sweetness or want a lighter option, replace the maple syrup with an equal amount of broth. Molasses is another substitute if you don’t have maple syrup and still want a touch of sweetness.

Make It a Meal

This crockpot ham supper is a complete main dish, but you can round it out with a simple green salad, steamed peas, and warm bread or cornbread for a classic country-style meal.

Recipe Directions

1. Slice sweet potatoes and the onion. Cut the carrots if needed so they fit in the slow cooker.

2. Arrange the carrots, onion, and sliced potatoes in the bottom of the crockpot to form a bed for the ham.

3. Place the ham on top of the vegetables.

4. Pour the maple syrup evenly over the ham and vegetables. Cover the crockpot.

5. Cook on low for 6–8 hours (some versions cook 4–6 hours; longer cooking on low yields more tender results). When the ham is heated through and vegetables are tender, it’s ready to serve.
