6 Simple Electrical Problems To Troubleshoot Before Calling an Electrician
Electricians frequently respond to service calls that could have been avoided with a few basic checks. Below are six practical steps to help you identify and often resolve routine issues.
1. Try more than one bulb
When a light fixture won’t turn on, the first and easiest test is to try another bulb. Bulbs sometimes fail in batches, and a single replacement may be defective. Move a known working bulb from another fixture into the problem socket. If the light works with the replacement bulb, the old bulb was likely the issue. This simple swap can eliminate a service call in seconds.
2. Check all the switches controlling the light
Some lights are controlled by multiple switches, such as three-way switches used in hallways or stairwells. If one switch is left in an intermediate position, the circuit may not complete and the light will not turn on. Test every switch associated with the fixture, flipping each fully on and off. Often the problem is just one switch out of sync.
3. If power is out in your home, check the neighborhood first
If all the power in your home is out, look outside or ask neighbors to see if they are affected too. A wide outage indicates an issue with the utility company, not your wiring. If the outage is isolated to your home or a portion of it, inspect your electrical panel: flip tripped breakers fully off and then back on, or replace blown fuses with the correct type and rating. Resetting the panel often restores power quickly.
4. Reset GFCI outlets for nonworking appliances
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets are required in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas near water. These outlets include Test and Reset buttons. If an appliance suddenly stops working, the GFCI may have tripped to prevent shock. Press the Reset button on the outlet and try the appliance again. This is a common and safe first step for troubleshooting.
5. Unplug appliances if breakers keep tripping
Frequent tripping can mean too many devices are drawing power on one circuit. Unplug nonessential appliances, then reset the breaker. Plug appliances back in one at a time to identify which device draws excessive current. You can estimate appliance load by checking nameplate wattage and adding the totals for devices on a single circuit. For reference, a 15-amp circuit typically supports about 1,350 watts and a 20-amp circuit about 1,800 watts before tripping. Staying within those limits helps prevent nuisance trips and potential hazards.
6. Label outlets and breakers to save time later
Mapping and numbering outlets, switches and breakers is a practical step that pays off. Work with a helper: turn off a breaker and note which outlets and lights lose power, then label them on the breaker panel. Knowing which outlets correspond to each breaker speeds up troubleshooting and reduces the time an electrician needs if professional help is required. Clear labeling improves safety and makes future maintenance easier.
Perry emphasizes safety: never bypass safety devices or use oversized fuses to stop a circuit from tripping. Breakers and fuses are designed to prevent overheating and fire; they should never be altered to mask an underlying issue.
