A French Martini is a refined, modern classic made from Chambord, pineapple juice, and vodka. Bright, fruity, and slightly tart, it’s an easy cocktail that feels elegant.

This French Martini is one of my husband’s favorites. When we order it at bars, bartenders sometimes need a reminder of the ingredients — so now I make them at home. It’s simple, quick, and far less expensive than ordering out.
The recipe combines pineapple juice (fresh or canned), a good-quality vodka, and Chambord raspberry liqueur. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. For a finishing touch, garnish with a lemon twist, a pineapple slice, or a single raspberry.
Why Is It Called a French Martini?
The French Martini was created in New York City in the late 1980s. Its “French” label comes from Chambord, a French black raspberry liqueur with roots going back centuries. The combination of Chambord and pineapple juice gives the drink its distinctive flavor and name.
What Are the Main Types of Martinis?
Traditional martinis use gin or vodka with dry vermouth. A “dirty martini” adds olive brine for savory depth. Sweet variations, like the French Martini, use liqueurs, fruit juices, or syrups to create a dessert-like cocktail.
The version below follows the recipe included with my bottle of Chambord, adapted for easy home preparation.
French Martini vs. French Kiss
A French Kiss and a French Martini both feature Chambord and vodka, but they differ. The French Kiss often uses fresh raspberries and simple syrup, making it sweeter and fruit-forward. The French Martini relies on pineapple juice for a brighter, slightly tangy profile.
French Martini Ingredients
Below is a quick ingredient list. Full measurements and step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card further down.
- Vodka – use a smooth, quality vodka for the best result.
- Chambord – a French black raspberry liqueur with a cognac base and rich berry flavor.
- Pineapple Juice – fresh is ideal, but canned pineapple juice works well and is convenient.
- Ice – for chilling the shaker and glasses.
- Garnish (optional) – lemon twist, pineapple slice, or a raspberry.

How to Make a French Martini with Chambord
This cocktail is quick and impressive. Follow these steps to make a smooth, balanced French Martini.

Chill
Fill your martini glass with ice and cold water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

Shake
Add ice to your shaker, then pour in the pineapple juice, vodka, and Chambord. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 30–60 seconds until well chilled and slightly frothy.
A mason jar or a standard cocktail shaker both work; use what you’re comfortable with.

Pour
Discard the ice water from the chilled glass. Strain the shaken cocktail into the glass and serve immediately.
The light foam on top is from the chilled pineapple juice and gives the drink a pretty finish.

What to Use If You Don’t Have Chambord
If you don’t have Chambord, consider these alternatives that offer a similar berry sweetness and color:
- Crème de cassis
- Blackberry liqueur
- Black currant liqueur
- Blackberry schnapps
- Framboise (raspberry liqueur)
Can You Use Gin Instead of Vodka?
Yes. A gin-based French Martini adds botanical nuance and can be very enjoyable if you prefer gin over vodka. Use whichever base spirit you like best.
